NDP BILL TO SEND GENERIC DRUGS OVERSEAS PASSES VOTE
I’m writing to confirm the good news that Bill C-393 has survived the Harper government’s arbitrary decision to prorogue Parliament until March 3rd.
Unlike government-sponsored bills and all Senate bills – including, regrettably, Bill S-232 – my bill to reform CAMR and other private members’ bills in the House will continue on the agenda when Parliament eventually returns.
As you know, with your active support, Bill C-393 passed second reading on December 2nd by a vote of 143 to 127. It was then referred to the Industry Committee for further study. I expect the Committee will begin its study of C-393 shortly after Parliament resumes.
Knowing I have your continuing active support, I’m looking forward to the challenge of getting C-393 through Committee Stage – and it is certain to be a challenge!
Those of you who followed S-232 at the Senate Banking Trade and Commerce Committee will have had a taste of the brand-name pharmaceutical corporations’ determination to keep CAMR ineffective. However, the Senate Committee hearings also revealed the emptiness, exaggeration and self-interest in Big Pharma’s arguments against CAMR reform.
I’m hopeful that, with your support and the overwhelming will of Canadians to realize CAMR’s original humanitarian intent, we will be able to translate the lessons learned and the evidence mounted in the Senate into an Industry Committee endorsement for Bill C-393.
